Cultural Alignment with BASF WSP and BASF share similar values . We are both future-focused, global leaders who have pioneered innovation and embraced change. Our relationship goes back decades, starting with the joint servicing of the same mining customers, to eventually WSP providing those same services at BASF sites. The product knowledge that we’ve gained through those years allowed us, in some cases, to use BASF products to solve BASF problems in new and innovative ways, while at the same time identify new potential markets for BASF. As a result, BASF is our fastest growing chemical client globally at this time.

Partnering with BASF to Deliver Solutions

Product Development WSP’s work with BASF is almost unique in our portfolio of industrial and chemical sector clients. Our two companies have jointly supported the same mining clients/customers for decades, with a large part of that relationship being BASF’s trust in our knowledge of its products and how to best apply them at industrial/ mining settings. In recent years, this arrangement expanded to where WSP evaluated new or expanded potential uses of BASF products for the environmental and ESG markets that WSP did business in. Whether it was with flocculants, super absorbents, or adhesives, WSP has applied it’s diverse market knowledge and portfolio of client needs to help BASF improve its sale of products. It is a symbiotic relationship as often the innovation is applied to BASF projects to improve its performance, while also educating our own staff on the BASF product so that it can be applied on non-BASF projects as well.

Social Equity WSP has formed an Equity Centre of Excellence for the purpose of operationalizing equity in our own projects and to help our clients do the same. BASF was a keynote speaker at our annual technology conference, where the role of social equity in environmental remediation projects was discussed. The discussion has continued since then, with WSP presenting to BASF in the US, on the broader topic of Project Management through an Equity Lens. This is one of several themes in which our two companies are aligned.

Confidential Expert Testimony ----------------------------------------- PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS — While most of WSP’s services to BASF to date have been to provide subject matter expertise and delivery capacity on actual projects that we are undertaking, WSP can also apply that subject matter expertise for evaluation of other scenarios. — On short notice, WSP was able to provide BASF with senior level expertise to evaluate the potential for future environmental liabilities should the operational layout be forced to change due to decisions made by neighbouring facilities. WSP was able to help make BASF successfully make its case to its neighbour, to allow operations to continue at the BASF site without significant re-work. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Geotechnical Support (Shoreline Stabilization and Surface Restoration) ----------------------------------------- PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS — WSP is actively supporting BASF with design support and stakeholder consultation services for an ongoing habitat restoration project on islands in a river setting. The overarching goal of the project is to identify ways to improve the long-term physical and chemical stability of the islands through a combination of shoreline improvement and the construction of offshore breakwaters. — The project highlights WSP’s ability to engage a highly experienced, multi-disciplinary geotechnical, geochemical and hydrogeological team to a complex site. — An interesting aspect of this project is the evaluation of a BASF product (Elastocoast) as a potential component in the final design as well as for use in other WSP projects. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Facility Decommissioning ----------------------------------------- PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS — WSP has provided support to BASF at two facility decommissioning projects in the past few years which included conducting staged investigations to identify and quantify the presence of any environmental issues as well as tot develop a Conceptual Site Model of the properties to identify potential exposure pathways and receptors. — We then set up and led meetings between BASF and regulatory agencies to reach agreement on the scope of the decommissioning activities, and followed that with converting that into a scope of work for the demolition contractors. — While the demolition contractor was hired directly by BASF in these cases, WSP developed the decontamination/ closure procedures for the contractor including the management of hazardous building materials. We provided oversight of the demolition work and the post-demolition residual waste removal activities. — All of the work – by WSP and the demolition contractors – was completed without a single health and safety incident. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sediment Remediation ----------------------------------------- PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS — WSP has been hired to conduct a Pre-Design Investigation, Design and Construction Remedy for a 100 Ha floodplain including a 40-Ha pond containing contaminated sediments. This multi-year project has included two years of site characterization work which has largely been completed at this time and required the support of 180 staff and 30 contractors, providing over 35,000 hours, all without a single health and safety incident — Over 2,000 samples of surface water, soil, sediment, weather, water levels, fish and other biota were used to refine the understanding of the scale of the contamination and the of the physical challenges to be overcome during the implementation of the remedy. — The work is now transitioning to design work, feasibility and pilot-scale studies, and to be followed by the full-scale construction of the remedial solution -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multidisciplinary thinking across sectors

AVOID Avoid negative impacts on the natural world.

Biodiversity is vital to human wellbeing and to our planet’s health. It is also essential to a wide range of industries, sustains countless jobs and provides us with healthy food. Protecting biodiversity is thus in line with WSP’s purpose, i.e. future-proofing our cities and our environment. Protecting biodiversity and soil health is a natural extension of our commitment to mitigate climate change, two interrelated issues that need to be tackled simultaneously. By preserving habitats and supporting healthy soils, we can address biodiversity loss and climate change while supporting underserved communities that are bearing the brunt of environmental degradation. Protecting biodiversity is aligned with Future Ready business strategy and our Global Environmental, Social & Governance Statement. We are change agents and, through our work, we can protect and restore ecosystems to help improve all life on Earth.

We work with clients to support biodiversity and natural capital in a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure (transportation, power and energy, water), development (real estate, construction, urban planning), public sector (all levels of government), financial institutions (private equity, international financing corporations, development banks), mining, industry, conservation authorities and not-for-profit organizations.

MINIMIZE Minimize any such impacts.
