AR DEFINED AR tools are unique because they add computer generated information over real-time, real-world views, which immediately augments the user experience and increases a viewer’s understanding of the information being presented. This overlaid digital information can include 3D models of future designs or construction, hidden or unseen details or elements, or additional data that augments a viewer’s interpretation of the real-world information before them. AR can be as simple as a 3D rendering of a proposed project visible over a 2D plan design document, or as complex as a geospatially positioned 3D scene.

AR’s immersive and realistic experience supports the project life cycle—from planning scenarios and design evaluation to construction staging and stakeholder communications. AR delivers a visceral and immersive experience that realistically portrays projects in context of their intended environment. AR portrays projects at true scale and with associated information that enhances the viewer’s understanding of what they are viewing. Existing 3D model-based design workflows (BIM/VDC) can be easily adapted to create AR environments, which can accelerate decision making and more effectively communicate project details to stakeholders.
