NMDOT Parts Catalog Part 2

NMDOT PARTS CATALOG – PART 2

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

separate part catalogs in their drawings when creating or modifying parts. The distinction between existing and proposed parts is classified by the part lists in C3D.

Part Builder, a feature native to Civil 3D, was used to modify the existing catalog shapes and provide an new list of pipes organized by size, material, and shape. Part Builder was used to create circular pipes, concrete box culverts, arch pipes, and elliptical pipes. Each of these types of pipes were organized into chapters, which are groups of pipes in C3D. Chapters were made for both existing and proposed pipes. The materials modeled in the existing chapters were metal, concrete, and plastic, based on dimensions from local manufacturers. For the proposed chapters, concrete was modeled exclusively for circular pipes because it is more conservative in respect to size. However, the proposed metal arch pipes were modeled because they had their own unique size and NMDOT bid item number. The dimensions for each pipe were entered into the Part Builder parameters table and brought into C3D. Figure 6 shows the Part Builder view. For New Mexico manufacturers, arch pipes have an irregular section consisting of three different radii. This shape was simplified to allow the pipes to be modeled in Part Builder, which lacks the capability to model complex structures. Only the span and rise were used as parameters in the simplified pipe’s cross section. Figure 7 and Figure 8 show the true arch pipe section and simplified section, respectively. Modifying pipe size and type is straightforward in Part Builder and involves only modifying the existing tables.
