WALT WHITMAN BRIDGE (Engineer of Record, O.H. Ammann) Client and Owner: Delaware River Port Authority Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Core Services: Rehabilitation, Biennial Inspection, Emergency Response Inspection, Dehumidification • Completed 1957 over the Delaware River • 11,981 feet in total length with a main span of 2,000 feet • Main Cable Dehumidification: WSP is the prime designer for the main cable dehumidification system. System design includes numerous never before implemented features/innovations. • Anchorage Dehumidification. Designed a stand-alone anchorage splay chamber dehumidification system. Decades later, modified system to incorporate into main cable dehumidification system. • Main Cable Investigation: Performed the design. construction support and analysis of the main cables; including supervision of the wire testing. Determined strength of cables as-inspection and compared to as deigned strength to forecast future needs. • Load Ratings: Performed load rating calculations for every element of the suspension bridge, including the analysis of the effects of permit/overweight vehicles. • Biennial Inspections: 2000, 2002, 2020 and 2024. Inspections included evaluation of fatigue sensitive details and fracture critical members.
Client: New York City Department of Transportation Location: New York City, Manhattan/Brooklyn Core Services: Contract 9 - In depth inspection, load rating, preliminary/final design, PS&E and CSS in joint venture. • Completed 1903 with, 1,600 ft. main span with four main cables and 596 ft. side spans supported by trusses on piers. The multi-modal bridge carries eight traffic lanes, two center NYCT subway tracks, and pedestrian/bicycle pathways. • Preliminary Design Phase for Contract 9: in-depth inspection for bridge/approaches/roadway wearing surface, study to install cable dehumidification and widening of the towers at the outer roadways, computer models for analyzing bridge and approaches, load ratings, reports and preparation of preliminary PS&E. • Final Design Phase for Contract 9: final design/PS&E for replacing bridge/approach expansion joints, reinforcing truss bottom chords, floorbeams, laterals, gusset plates, diagonals and intermediate towers, replacing overhead truss hangers and replacing orthotropic deck overlay. • Final Design Phase in advance of Contract 9: final design/PS&E for replacing suspenders at midspan, main cable elastomeric wrapping at select locations and main cable inspection. • Construction Support Services for Contract 9: review of shop drawings, contractor requests for information, preparating field change sheets, coordinating with client, contractor and New York City Transit.
