EXPERIENCE IN MAIN CABLE DEHUMIDIFICATION Over the past 12 years, main cable dehumidification systems have been installed on select suspension bridges across North America. As part of WSP’s cable preservation services, our team of experts has continually worked on cable dehumidification projects over the past 12 years. As the only engineering firm with experience as both Owner’s Engineer and Contractor’s Engineer, we have a unique perspective on the level of detail associated with the development of multi disciplinary dehumidification systems. The performance of these systems in achieving the desired objective of maintaining relative humidity (RH) readings of less than 40% at exhaust locations lacks consistency. As there is presently no code governing the application of dehumidification systems, WSP has compiled observations through involvement in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of 10 suspension bridge main cable dehumidification systems. By comparing performance across systems at different bridges, considering variables such as air flow resistance in cables, the performance of Dehumidification Plant Equipment (DPE), and performance of Control and Monitoring Systems (CMS), our engineers have developed improvements in the application of cable dehumidification technologies, including retrofits to existing systems.
