AUGMENTED REALITY FOR PLANNING, DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

AR DEFINED AR tools are unique because they add computer generated information over real-time, real-world views, which immediately augments the user experience and increases a viewer’s understanding of the information being presented. This overlaid digital information can include 3D models of future designs or construction, hidden or unseen details or elements, or additional data that augments a viewer’s interpretation of the real-world information before them. AR can be as simple as a 3D rendering of a proposed project visible over a 2D plan design document, or as complex as a geospatially positioned 3D scene.

Augmented reality (AR) tools are achievable,

Augmented reality (AR) tools are achievable, affordable, and practical at WSP. With advances in portable AR equipment and integration of computer hardware with 3D modeling applications, WSP has adapted AR technology for multiple infrastructure applications. AR’s immersive and realistic experience supports the project life cycle—from planning scenarios and design evaluation to construction staging and stakeholder communications. AR delivers a visceral and immersive experience that realistically portrays projects in context of their intended environment. PHOTO SIMULATION

Photo simulations are a cost effective visualization technique to view design concepts in context and illustrate potential visual impacts. Photo simulations combine the accuracy of 3D CAD and photography to represent design concepts accurately. PROCESS Photo simulations combine site photography and 3D modeling of designs from project CAD and GIS documents. Typically, a 3D model is created from CAD and positioned using GIS data. Cameras and lighting in the model are matched to the photography. The matching 3D views are rendered by the computer and combined in a digital painting application like Adobe Photoshop where elements of the image can be replaced. An animated, or “2.5D” photo simulation adds animated vehicles and people to turn the still image into a video. Video clips shot with moving cameras can also be matched and simulated through a similar process.

BENEFITS — Accurately represent visual impacts — Design concepts displayed within context — Cost-effective and faster turnaround visualization — Visual realism

EXAMPLE APPLICATIONS — Visual impact analysis — Before/after views — Lighting analysis — Design alternatives — Community involvement

UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEM (UAS) REALITY CAPTURE

VALUE — Fast and efficient data collection

UAS (drone) aerial imagery is a vital tool across the project life cycle to supplement project design and operations, and stakeholder communication. Aerial imagery offers a unique and comprehensive view of large scale infrastructure projects. UAS operations offer several transformative aspects for project delivery by enhancing worker safety while improving productivity and reducing cost. 3D contextual models produced using aerial imagery and photogrammetric tools provide realistic and accurate context models as starting points for planning and design projects. Integration of UAS imagery with other visualization technologies and cinematic capture techniques

— Unique views and perspectives on projects — Access hard-to-reach or hazardous locations — No disturbance to wildlife and environment — Risk mitigation and worker safety — View areas not easily visible to naked eye — High-quality reality conditions capture — Survey and context mapping — Capture large scale project areas

EXAMPLE APPLICATIONS — Project documentation

— Imagery for incident response events — Project construction documentation — Safety or construction inspection — Collecting project asset information — Development of accurate and realistic 3D context models

leverages that imagery as a powerful storytelling tool.

VIRTUAL REALITY FOR PLANNING, DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

VR delivers a visceral and immersive experience that realistically portrays projects at true scale and is especially beneficial for projects that are difficult to access or have large-scale infrastructure. Existing 3D model-based design workflows (BIM/VDC) can be easily adapted to create VR environments, which can accelerate decision-making and more effectively communicate project details to stakeholders. VR DEFINED VR uses computer imagery to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional digital user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed in a fully interactive 3D world. While VR environments are not “real,” the cumulative effects of the detailed 3D model, the full-perspective 360-degree headset view, and the corresponding user-driven changes in viewpoint and location result in an experience that feels “virtually” real. BENEFITS

Virtual reality (VR) environments are achievable, affordable, and practical at WSP. With advances in portable VR equipment and the integration of hardware with 3D modeling applications, we have adapted VR game technology for infrastructure applications. VR’s immersive and real-scale experience can support all phases of your project, including planning and design evaluation, construction staging, and stakeholder communications.
