PHOTO SIMULATION

Photo simulations are a cost effective visualization technique to view design concepts in context and illustrate potential visual impacts. Photo simulations combine the accuracy of 3D CAD and photography to represent design concepts accurately. PROCESS Photo simulations combine site photography and 3D modeling of designs from project CAD and GIS documents. Typically, a 3D model is created from CAD and positioned using GIS data. Cameras and lighting in the model are matched to the photography. The matching 3D views are rendered by the computer and combined in a digital painting application like Adobe Photoshop where elements of the image can be replaced. An animated, or “2.5D” photo simulation adds animated vehicles and people to turn the still image into a video. Video clips shot with moving cameras can also be matched and simulated through a similar process.

BENEFITS — Accurately represent visual impacts — Design concepts displayed within context — Cost-effective and faster turnaround visualization — Visual realism

EXAMPLE APPLICATIONS — Visual impact analysis — Before/after views — Lighting analysis — Design alternatives — Community involvement

GRAPHIC DESIGN

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

Graphic design creatively synthesizes and simplifies complex, technical information and difficult concepts to accelerate understanding; improve design, planning and delivery processes; and facilitate consensus-building and communication. Graphic design strategically blends both art and technology to organize and convey meaning.

Graphic designers apply design and aesthetics to scientific and technical information. Through the mediums of emotions, colors, fonts, images, symbols, and design styles, graphic design simplifies and humanizes complex content, ensuring that your message is easily understood by non technical audiences.

LARGE DOCUMENT PRODUCTION

WHAT IS A LARGE DOCUMENT? A document is typically considered ‘large’ if it is longer than 40-50 pages with characteristics not typically found in smaller documents. — Includes multi-author content. — Requires an editorial review for consistency across chapters. — Relies on complex tables, figures and graphics rather than glossy images. — Requires significant coordination for review and revision cycles to finalize document. — Needs Section 504/508 accessibility review and remediation. — Includes management of notes, glossaries, bibliographies, indexes, citations, and other front- or end-matter. BENEFITS — Produce accessible-compliant deliverable. — Facilitate revisions during design/layout. — Maximize concurrent workflows for scheduling efficiency. — Minimize rework and costly iterative changes during design and layout.

Delivery of large documents is streamlined with an orchestrated workflow that includes expertise from technical editors, graphic designers, and accessibility consultants working in tandem with content authors.

Pre-planning will facilitate overcoming document development pain points.

P Overcoming Document Development Pain Points 1. A document planning kickoff meeting with the design team will help focus the process and the efforts of the author team on the speci  c needs of the deliverable. 2. Ensuring that the authors understand and use the Word Template and Author’s Guide when developing their content will speed the import and layout of document content. 3. Approval and sign-off on  nal text and graphic content before the design team begins the layout process will minimize more costly iterative changes during layout and design. PRE-PLANNING FOR SUCCESS — VDI large document designers deliver both exceptional graphic design and effective document development consultation. By involving VDI’s designers early in the document planning process we can guide your team through the five primary document development steps. PROCESS AND COLLABORATION — Our planning and collaboration tools help us organize and track the simultaneous efforts required of the design and author teams, ensuring that deadlines are understood and schedules are maintained. — VDI designers regularly work together with VDI technical editors, employing well-tested methods for accelerating document development. Our process maximizes time for authors and subject matter experts to develop their content while allowing our team to maintain editorial and design consistency.

4. Designing iteratively, or keeping the document layout up-to-date while the content is still being developed, is one of the most expensive and time-consuming ways to create a document. When designing iteratively, the design team must constantly repeat steps to ensure a consistent  nal product. Designing iteratively also creates opportunities for errors to occur as text is edited and content is incrementally changed. 5. Ensuring that all reviewers have commented and all questions/comments resolved before editing the document is the most cost effective way to revise the content and minimize errors.

6. Repeated rounds of revision are costly and can introduce errors or missed changes. Repeated rounds of revision can also introduce version control issues. 7. While some accessibility remediation is built into the design of the document,  nal remediation must be done in the PDF deliverable itself. Changes to the document after remediation will require re-remediating the new PDF. Waiting to remediate the document until a  nal PDF is approved is the most cost-effective and ef  cient process.
