2.8 Existing Transit Services

The resulting network is a patchwork of largely uncoordinated services that vary widely in service quality and availability. Like all transportation in Monroe County, transit services are constrained by the county’s dependence on US 1, the only road connecting the Keys to the mainland and to each other. Delays caused by traffic jams on US 1 degrade the schedule reliability of bus routes using US 1, which in turn limits the benefits of services meant to feed and distribute passengers from these services. However, limited and unevenly distributed resources and lack of service coordination also limits the quality and effectiveness of existing services.

Monroe County’s existing transit services include longer-distance services providing transit connections to Miami and between the Keys via US 1; fixed-route and microtransit services that provides connections within one or a small group of islands, as well as feeder-distributor connections to the routes operating on US 1; and paratransit services for disabled customers. Monroe County’s transit services are operated or funded by several municipalities, Miami-Dade Transit (MDT), non-profit organizations and by Monroe County.
