2.4 Origin & Destination Surveys 2.1.1 Customer Profiles The development and analysis of customer profiles were developed for the five routes that provide longer-distance services that operate primarily on US 1 between Florida City and Key West riders based on survey data collected from riders. WSP fielded the survey in English and Spanish from July 17 through July 19, 2023. Participants were invited to take the survey by WSP team members at the various transfer sites and onboard the five routes including MDT routes 301, 302, and Key West Transit’s Lower Keys Shuttle & Work Force Shuttle and Key West Rides. The survey yielded 98 valid responses from a diverse group of riders with varying demographics, routes, trip frequencies, trip purposes, and perspectives. The full data set is located in Appendix II 2.1.2 Purpose An Origin Destination Survey documents the travel patterns of the users of transit routes. By identifying Transit riders’ starting and ending locations along the surveyed routes. This provides planners on a range of information, including the start and end point of a trip, means of commuting (Walk, Bike, or Vehicle) to and from the transit location such as a bus, train station, or a park & ride lot, other routes taken to their destination, method of paying the transit fare, demographics of the riders within that survey area and much more.

Key Findings • Approximately 80% of riders surveyed were going to or from work. • Approximately 75% of riders surveyed either work full time or part time. • Approximately 70% of riders surveyed reported they do not have a driver’s license and/or a vehicle they can reliably use. Nearly 70% either biked or walked to the bus stop. • Approximately 70% of riders are paying cash for their fares. The data collected from this survey helps the agencies assess the performance of the route that is being surveyed and the overall transit system. Decisions such as adding or removing a bus stop, altering the circulation of the route, or scheduling to improve service are determined by assessing the data collected through the survey.
