2.5 GIS The interoperability between Civil 3D and GIS was explored so that pipe networks can be generated from shapefiles (.shp) created in GIS. For example, NMDOT’s Culvert Asset Management Program (CAMP) manages a GIS database of existing culverts on NMDOT infrastructure. Shapefiles can be imported into Civil 3D as Pipe Networks, and pipe sizes can be matched with corresponding attributes. Geospatial and elevation data can also be imported from the shapefile into the pipe network. Figure 10 shows this exporting process. Civil 3D pipe networks can be exported as shapefiles by using the “Export Civil Objects to SDF” and then exporting the SDF data as shapefile data. The new pipe network catalog allows users to more accurately model pipes imported from GIS or exported to GIS.
